Come Join Us for a research visit to the Denver Public Library Western History Section
BGS members will be visiting the newly remodeled downtown Denver Public Library and its great genealogy collection for conduction research.
THE VISIT…
The Denver Public Library (DPL) has one of the nation’s largest and finest collections on the history of the American West. Created in 1935, the collection continues to grow and currently includes more than 250,000 cataloged books, architectural records, atlases, pamphlets, and microfilm titles, as well as an estimated 6,000 maps, a million photographs, and more than 5,000 manuscripts. The Western History Collections and Archives has million of the library’s images have been digitized for free public access, a process in which DPL became a national leader.
Some examples of genealogical related information that is available in the collection:
- Karen Y. found a book on Kansas that had an article about her great-great-grandfather, William Thomas English, 1840-1920, and his family.
- Gail E. found a map that showed the migration of the Brethren Church in Pennsylvania.
If you have a DPL Library Card, please remember to bring it as you may need it to check out any materials that are available for check-out. For DPL Library Card information, click here, if interested in getting a library card.
If staying after lunch to continue your research in the afternoon, please plan on bringing your lunch or going to a one of the near-by restaurants.
The plan is to carpool… Please meet at the Broomfield public library at 9:30 AM; a few dollars to compensate the driver for gas and parking would be greatly appreciated.
Or you are welcome to drive yourself and meet us at the library (10 W 14th Avenue Pkwy. Denver, CO 80204), on the 5th floor in the lobby area around 10:00 AM.
