Celebrating 25 Years!

“Written in Stone: Searching for Tombstones and their Meaning
Presented by: Gail Elias

Join us for an educational evening as BGS member Gail Elias presents “Written in Stone: Searching for Tombstones and their Meaning.” Genealogists love tombstones – actually the information that’s on them. In this program, we’ll explore:

  • The similarities and differences between commonly used online sources,
  • The history of tombstones in the United States and its relevance for genealogists, and
  • What the symbols may tell you about the person and his/her community.

Come join us to explore what’s written in stone.

About the Speaker – Gail Elias

Gail Elias is a member of the Broomfield Genealogy Society, Blair County (PA) Genealogy Society, and the Pennsylvania and Maryland Genealogy State Societies. She’s a long-time amateur genealogist, who loves solving 250-year-old cold cases for women who want to join the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) as part of the State Application Team. This lineage research almost always involves wandering through today’s “virtual cemeteries.”

More to the point of this program, however, wandering through real cemeteries, from New York and Pennsylvania to Kansas and Colorado, looking for dead relatives has been tradition in her family. In these physical spaces, the differences among tombstones – their style, materials, and what we chose to put on them – are more evident. She’ll share what she’s learned along the way – along with a few interesting “tombstones” that she’s found.

Evening Schedule:

  • 6:30 PM – Informal Meet and Greet
  • 6:50 PM – Brief Business Meeting
  • 7:00 PM – Program Presentation and Q&A
